Domain Name Request Form (for harvard.edu):

Advance permission is required from the Trademark Program for use of a “harvard.edu” domain name (e.g., "help.harvard.edu," "poetryforum.harvard.edu," "hsci.harvard.edu," etc.). The following criteria must be met in order to obtain approval:

  1. The project, activity, or department/unit represented by the domain name needs to be University-wide in nature: the structure and governance must have faculty involvement from at least three separate schools and/or must formally report to University-wide officers, such as the President and/or Provost or a group of Deans from several schools.
  2. The domain name being requested should not cause confusion with a present or future project, activity, or department/unit elsewhere in the University, nor can the proposed domain name be too broad in scope (e.g.,"policy.harvard.edu”, "email.harvard.edu," etc.); in the case of broad domain names, when granted, approval is given with the understanding that the domain name will be made available for use by all within the University to which the domain might apply. For example, please see www.help.harvard.edu or www.science.harvard.edu.
  3. The "Harvard" web site, related to the domain name being requested, cannot be hosted off site (i.e. on a non-Harvard server) without approval from the local Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the Senior Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer.

Please note: if the proposed domain name is primarily associated with an activity that is school or unit-based and is not University-wide in nature, then the appropriate school specific domain should be used (e.g., "fas.harvard.edu," "hms.harvard.edu," etc.).

The Trademark Program prioritizes Domain Name requests in the order in which they are received and approves, disapproves, or asks for further information regarding the request within approximately 5 business days.

Please complete all relevant fields (bold fields required).
