In spring 2024, the [Open Inquiry and Constructive Dialogue Working Group](/open-inquiry-and-academic-freedom) was convened to explore the question of how best to reinforce and nurture a culture of open inquiry and constructive dialogue at Harvard. Composed of faculty members from across the University, the Working Group was asked to explore how to advance the rigorous discourse and robust debate necessary to ensure excellence in Harvard’s teaching, learning, and research mission.

Through engagement efforts that included 23 listening sessions, online surveys, and other avenues for input, the Working Group gathered perspectives from students, faculty, staff, and alumni representing every Harvard school. More than 600 individuals participated in listening sessions, and thousands shared their views through surveys and in correspondence. In assessing the climate for teaching and learning at Harvard, the Working Group found that some community members are reluctant to share their views on controversial topics, while noting that there is a constellation of efforts already underway across Harvard to encourage dialogue and enliven learning communities.

These findings, along with a set of recommendations to promote robust discussion inside and outside the classroom are set forth in the Report of Harvard University’s Open Inquiry and Constructive Dialogue Working Group. On Tuesday, October 1, President Alan M. Garber and Provost John F. Manning announced the release of the report and accepted its recommendations to reinforce the free exchange of ideas, rigorous discourse, and empathy for all members of our learning communities.
