Harvard Online

Harvard University has been a leader in the online learning landscape since the founding of edX and HarvardX in 2012 and has built upon our expertise to pioneer innovative pedagogies and technologies through the launch of Harvard Online in 2022.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning (VPAL) oversees the development of engaging online learning experiences for multiple platforms as part of their mission to create and catalyze deeply engaging and scalable learning experiences that make a difference at Harvard and beyond.

Harvard Online presents curated online courses that combine faculty and disciplines from across the University, connecting learners around the globe with the world’s most urgent issues. These innovative short- and long-form online learning experiences for individuals and professional partners build upon the successes of HarvardX in expanding access to education worldwide by enabling Harvard faculty to create open online learning experiences for residential and online use.

Many other groups across Harvard, including The Harvard Initiative for Learning & TeachingHMS Teaching and Learning Technologies, and The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, share similar goals, all directed at promoting innovation, convening best practices, and leading in learning. VPAL connects these networks of teaching and learning experts to drive advancements in hybrid and digital learning.
